madnezzz asked: You know, talking about all the derivatives of each bending got me thinking, fire has lightning, water has blood, earth has metal.... what does air have? Have we ever seen a derivative of air bending and if not what would it even be if there was one? I cant say I remember air bending ever having a specialty. What do you guys think it would be?

My theory: soundbending. I believe a master airbender could bend the vibrations in air. We’ve seen Aang use airbending to amplify his voice. I think the art could be pushed forward to include creating silence and even mimicking sounds.

—Lucky Lu, Earthbender Extraordinaire

This is a theory that Lu and I have talked about a lot.  I like to imagine that Airbenders can still air molecules to prevent sound waves from traveling through them.  Imagine an airbender ninja that literally made no noise.  Now I know you might say, “but Beau airbenders are peaceful nomads with no interest in ninja-ing someone in the face…” and you would be right… as far as we know.  But there might be some unaccounted for airbenders who managed to remain out of sight, or out of SOUND for the past 170 years.  Airbender Ninjas are a thing, there I said it.  I’m worried that they are sore for the whole, sozin’s comet, killing everybody, thing.

—Beau, the slightly Terrified Firebender

They comin for ya….

piaddict asked: What do you think happened to the Air Nomad Temples?

I suspect that after A:TLA, Aang returned to the temples and gave the dead a proper burial. Besides the Mechanist’s colony in the Northern Air Temple, the other temples probably remained uninhabited ruins.

In the age of Korra, they might be maintained as cultural heritage sites by the White Lotus Society, but all of the major artifacts that are not a part of the architecture have probably been moved to Air Temple Island. The island is the beating heart of Air Nomad culture, placed next to the most vibrant city in the world to keep airbender culture alive.

Before Aang was born, Air Nomads traveled between the Temples and across the land to bring their teachings to the world. Today, Tenzin and his acolytes must focus their influence on Republic City.

hazzardman asked: I believe Korra may learn to unlock bending potential in nonbenders or even create multibenders. I see the potential for dual or even triple benders is that with the mixing of the diffrent bending cultures people can have two diffrent bender types as parents like Tenzin. Because I question why exactly is he not a water bender instead, after all Bolin and Mako are diffrent benders but are brothers So it seems bending capabilities are unpredictable when in last airbender it seems blood. Thoughts?

It would be interesting to see if energybenders could give back bending as well as take it away. This could be a cool end for Korra’s spiritual journey: first airbending, then the spirit world, and finally energybending.

I don’t think we’ll see multi-benders because it would diminish the Avatar, and muddle the themes of the show. Metalbenders and bloodbenders prove that you don’t need multiple bending abilities to do incredible things. On the other hand, the show has consistently shown us that sometimes abilities are lost (energybending) and sometimes they are discovered (metalbending), so it’s in the realm of possibility.

Lastly, it seems that mixed families can produce different types of benders, but you only get one. It’s like real-life genetics. Sometimes kids get red hair, and sometimes black hair, but you don’t see them get both on different parts of their body (no Rufio). In the case of Tenzin, he was born an airbender like his father, but his sister Kya is a waterbender and Bumi is a non-bender. He also turned out light-skinned like his father, but Kya and Bumi are dark-skinned like their mother. As a mixed-race person, this rings very true to my experience. Good job, Bryke.
